Trafficking of children under the age of 18 is defined as "the acquisition, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of a child for the purpose of exploitation" (Article 3 of the Protocol to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime). Sextortion victims receive sexual images and videos from children for the purpose of sexual exploitation, and can be said to be a form of human trafficking. The US Department of Defense has already taken up sextortion as the theme for Human Trafficking Prevention Month in January 2023.
